THE
SANTA MONICA TRACK FOUNDATION
1801
Ocean Park Blvd., Suite 201 The Santa Monica Track Foundation, a tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, is dedicated to the development of world class track and field athletes for Olympic and World Championships competition. The Foundation is closely affiliated with the Santa Monica Track Club, a California not-for-profit organization, which provides training and guidance for all athletes at all levels. The Santa Monica Track Foundation was founded in 1972 by Joe Douglas, who still serves as the Club’s President and head coach. While the Club’s mission is to help track and field and road running athletes of all levels, the focus has remained on post-collegiate athletes seeking to represent the United States in the Olympics and World Championships. Track and field athletes find themselves in a no-man’s-land after they graduate from college, making for a difficult transition to the professional ranks. Typically, athletes do not reach a level at which they can earn a living wage on the track circuit until three or more years after their college days. Without continuous support, many athletes retire because they can’t dedicate the time necessary to attain the highest competitive level. The Santa Monica Track Club and Foundation have dedicated themselves to remedying this situation. Until the mid-1970s, the Club had no means of support. Then, an outstanding masters runner and visionary by the name of Ed Stotsenberg joined the club. Mr. Stotsenberg provided the impetus for creating the Foundation, and for establishing means for raising funds. Mr. Stotsenberg’s own personal generosity created opportunities for numerous eventual Olympic medal winners. The Club’s dedication to its athletes has yielded 27 medals, including 19 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze. Twenty-seven Club athletes have qualified for the Olympics in 53 different events. The Club’s alumni include such luminaries as Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, Danny Everett, Steve Lewis, Johnny Gray, Jenny Spangler, Carol Lewis, Joe DeLoach, and Mike Marsh. None of these greats would have achieved their goals without the support from the Club and Foundation in their developing years. The Club and Foundation now encounters a new crop of young post-collegiate athletes with loads of potential and financial needs. We solicit your support to continue our tradition of producing the best for the United States Track and Field Team. The
Santa Monica Track Club extends its gratitude to the many people who have
financially contributed to the foundation. We would like to thank the
following who have kept the Club alive and running. Without their help,
the Club would not have been a successful club. |
